My Artsy Side

How Do I Express Myself?

Art is to me a form of expression. It is communication without words. It is communication through media. It is my coping mechanism. And it is my way of immortalizing timeless moments and thoughts, and sharing them with the world.

Astrophotography

Meteors, clear night skies, and moments of nothingness in family safaris coupled with the absurdity of theoretical and quantum physics have plagued my mind from childhood. I find beauty in spacetime, and solace in capturing stars and deep space objects that have since left us.

Landscape Photography

The Rift Valley viewpoint on the Kenyan Naivasha/Nakuru highway tells a story of our ancient planet, and our fleeting lives. Nothing grounds me more than appreciating our planet's geography, and remembering that we are, but passing clouds in this here earth.

Portrait Photography

From the brilliant beautiful faces that I've been privileged enough to connect with, to the desolate and hardy mountain flowers that I've had the pleasure of beholding. Portraits offer me an intimate space to capture miniscule and anthropomorphic beauty in the world through my lens, and how I see it.

Painting

A form of escapism that enables me to experience the turbulence of my human thought and emotions, and process them into something visual, something tactile, and something appealing.

Culinary Arts

I am an excellent cook, and I love throwing it down for family and friends when I'm hosting, and in an affable mood. I love making Italian cuisine (pizza, pasta, lasagna, and tiramisu), Levantine cuisine (hummus, falafel, pita bread, and tahini), Japanese cuisine (sushi, nigiri, and ramen), steaks (never well done), barbecues (pork, chicken, lamb, burgers, and sausages), sandwiches, and sauces (pesto, peanut, mango, chilli, and honey with garlic).

More on Paintings

Aquarelle/Water Colour Paintings

Goldfish, Koi fish, aquariums, and ponds transfixed me as a child, but I couldn't take care of them. I resorted to creating inanimate forms of my childhood obsession.

Acrylic Paintings

Post impressionist art, and Vincent Van Gogh inspire me to create renditions of classic pieces and original work to tell beautiful stories of my country's landscape.

Abstract Paintings

I use silicon oil, acrylic, water, and flames to create artistic impressions of my obsession with cells and water.

My Escape

"Sammy dreamed the usual Brooklyn dreams of flight and transformation and escape. He dreamed with fierce contrivance, transmuting himself into a major American novelist, or a famous smart person, like Clifton Fadiman, or perhaps into a heroic doctor;or developing, through practice and sheer force of will, the mental powers that would give him a preternatural control over the hearts and minds of men." — Michael Chabon, 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay'.

Astrophotography and Star Trails

'The Milky Way, and its Crux' by Nthusi. 30 seconds long exposure, focus on infinity, wide-angle lens, ISO 1600, and editing using Adobe Lightroom. A 800 km drive to Northern Kenya's Marsabit County, and the clear absence of light pollution exposed the Milky Way in all its glory to the naked eye. I couldn't resist the urge of whipping out my DLSR, and capturing this profound moment with my brother.

'A Moment of Nothingness' by Nthusi. 150 images, 30 seconds long exposure, focus on infinity, wide-angle lens, ISO 1600, editing using Adobe Lightroom, and stacking of images using StarStax. I took this photo at a difficult time in my life, but the warmth of friends, and the beauty of the nightsky drove me to take 200 photographs in the bone piercing cold of Mt. Kenya's Marania gate. Even in nadirs we can find beauty.
